Often, Cubans I met were very interested to know my opinion of Che before disclosing their own. So if Fidel is seen as an evil megalomaniac and Che a ruthless killer, are there any national heroes that the people actually look up to?

The answer is, absolutely. He appears on the Cuban 1 peso—both the bill and the coin—and a bust of his likeness is present in and outside every academic or scholarly building. Castro's passion and Guevara's ideas ignited each other. He was one of the few survivors of Castro's disastrous Granma landing, which the Cuban army had spotted. He earned Castro's confidence and was the first rebel to be given the rank of comandante.

Marching on Santa Clara in late , his column derailed an armored train filled with dictator Fulgencio Batista's troops and took over the city. Guevara's triumph would be the final blow in the rebel military campaign against Batista. Cuban Leader By January , Guevara, along with the Castro brothers, was recognized as one of the three most powerful leaders of the Cuban revolution. He became a Cuban citizen, divorced Hilda Galea, married a beautiful Cuban woman, Aleida March, and began a new family.
