If you decide to keep score, you may want to offer bonus points, ten points is a good amount, to any person who plays one of the current vocabulary words.
Part of learning how to spell in English is knowing what letter combinations appear frequently in words. In fact, serious Scrabble players will arrange their letter tiles to see common letter combinations in hopes of discovering a word they might play. These common combinations, such as ch , ll , sh , ck , br , tr , tion , etc. For ESL students, though, these letter combinations can be even more useful.
Common vowel pairings like ou or ee will help your students learn spelling patterns that English has. If you play with tiles visible, rather than keeping them private as in a serious game, you can point out to your students letter combinations they can make with the letters in their hand.
They may not be able to make a word with any given letter pairing, but just pointing out the common patterns will benefit them as they try to spell unfamiliar English words in the future. Numbers can be one of the toughest things to learn and practice in a foreign language. Since numbers are so abstract, any second language speaker will naturally read and write numbers while thinking of the words in their native language. To push your students to ingrain numbers in English, have one of your students keep score during the game.
However, rather than using numerals to keep the score, have your student write out the numbers using words. Do you not know what word to play on your turn? A dictionary can be a great help for those rounds in Scrabble when you or your students are scrambling for a word.
Options include playing with another player on the same device, playing solo with a random opponent, or joining other players over the Internet in a closed or open group. While these options make playing more competitive for Scrabble buffs, the game itself remains the same.
Gameplay will be familiar to anyone who has played the board game. The big difference is in the addition of online playing.
The free version includes ads, some of which remain on-screen for 30 seconds or more before you can reject opening them and continue to play. If you choose to play a random player, the game automatically matches you with a user and begins play.
Activating chat makes the experience feel more social but does introduce privacy concerns. Added features should serve to make the game easier and more user-friendly, but there are some shortcomings. For example, the included dictionary doesn't actually look up words -- it uses the dictionary built into the device keyboard as you type. As with the board game, players can use a print dictionary to really settle a dispute.
The good news: Unless you're playing offline, there's plenty of time -- the game settings range from 24 to 72 hours. It's worth the price. Scrabble fans will love being able to play anytime, anywhere, solo or with friends, or with online groups.
We have turned it into math lessons by looking at the tile values and the probability of pulling certain letters. We have compared strategies and written persuasive essays about whether its better to play a smaller word with large point values or a larger word to draw more letters.
Most of all, we use it as vocabulary tool. We use the "best word" function but ONLY if they look up the word that the app recommends and writes, not just a sentence, but an entire paragraph around that word. Essentially, they are buying the use of the cheat function. It's been an awesome experience for my students and has made my job that much more fun. My Take Scrabble can be an incredibly powerful learning tool with some caveats.
Teachers must be purposeful in its use and plan for it. You cannot simply have students play scrabble without direction.
